And among the things that aren't very amusing are the plight of refugees around the world.
According to the 1951 United Nations convention on refugees, a refugee is a person who “owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country.”
But that definition does not begin to tell the story of the unthinkable horrors that refugees endure. They are often forced to leave their homes suddenly, leaving behind all of their possessions except what they can carry with them. Though they seek safety in neighboring countries, when they arrive, they find horrendous conditions in refugee camps, and some of the most inhospitable conditions imaginable. Children become separated from their families. Refugees are often tortured by those detaining them.
There are 13 million refugees in the world today. That's why Spectacular Blog has joined a number of other bloggers through a group called Bloggers Unite to call attention to the plight of refugees and to provide our readers with some resources to find out what you can do in your own community to help people around the globe who are in dire circumstances, and who are afraid to go home.
